Remember. Remember. Remember.

Today is Tuesday, September 11, 2007. This date used to only be significant due to the wedding anniversary of my great-grandparents. Now I remember this day in a much different light because of what happened six years ago in the early morning hours of September 11, 2001.

The remembrance of the horror of that day and feelings of complete vulnerability are indelibly impressed upon my mind. Planes are not supposed to be used as missiles and purposefully crashed into buildings. At least not in America. At least not 90 miles from my hometown.

Images of dust and debris-clogged New York City streets, the eerie quietness of the empty sky, the memorials to lost loved ones, and the funeral we attended for a man who perished in the towers insured for me that this would always be a day to be remembered. Over and over again in the Scriptures we are commanded to remember. Remember God's mercies (Esther 9:28); remember God's works (II Chronicles 16:12); remember our iniquities (Deuteronomy 9:7); remember Christ's words (Acts 20:35); remember important days in history (Exodus 13:3); remember to Whom we owe allegiance (Luke 22:18). Remember. Remember. Remember.

So on this day, September 11, 2007, I want to remember the trial God allowed our country to bare as we witnessed the deaths of unsuspecting office workers and courageous rescue personnel at the World Trade Center, soldiers at the Pentagon, and the heroic passengers of Flight 93 who died in a Pennsylvania field. May we remember, and may our remembrances cause our focus to turn to Christ.
